Crazy mixed-up critter extravaganza

A great activity to put the 'A' in STEAM.

So with my group I chose to go the "imagination method". I split the group into teams of 2-4. For the first 15 minutes, each team chose a real world habitat, came up with a list of animals in that habitat, and noted some ability that suited that creature for its habitat. After I checked in with each group, they had 30 minutes to pick a different habitat (real or imagined), to draw and color their creature, and to write a brief biography of their critter in its environment.

They all became very creative and it was interesting to see the evolutionary one-upsmanship that developed among some teams where their creatures had specific abilities in response to the abilities another team member had added to their creature.

A great stepping-stone activity to discuss environmental adaptation or evolutionary pressure, as well as demonstrate common solutions to similar environmental problems regardless of habitat.
