Easy Way to Add Movement to Story Time
I used this activity as part of a "move and groove" story time for kids ages 2-5. I printed out the spinner on regular copy paper and glued it to a piece of corrugated cardboard. I used a thumb tack and a paperclip to make the spinner and it spun around really well. We danced to big band music for this activity.
The kids really had fun dancing with only the body part that was called out. There was some confusion between similar body parts - like hands vs. thumbs and legs vs. feet, so the kids had to really think about which body part they were moving.
My group got tired of this game fairly quickly and just wanted to dance to the music. I improvised a new game, where we spun the spinner and added each selected body part until we were using our whole bodies to dance.
Overall, this was a good activity to get the kids moving, especially the ones who were a little bit shy about dancing. It was easy for them to just move a foot or a thumb to the music until they were comfortable dancing full out.
